The Disappearance of Joan Risch | True Crime Sleep Stories

The Disappearance of Joan Risch – True Crime Sleep Stories episode cover

Lincoln, Massachusetts. October 24, 1961. Joan Risch, 31, spends an ordinary Tuesday morning with her two small children while her husband is on an overnight business trip to New York. A dentist visit. Lunch, a nap, a little pruning in the yard.
Around 2:15 a neighbor sees her moving quickly up the driveway in a trench coat, carrying something red. It is the last confirmed sighting. By late afternoon the children are home alone. The kitchen is overturned. A trail of blood leads to the car and stops. Nothing is stolen. The mail is still in the box.
Joan had lost both parents in a house fire at 8 years old. She had been an editorial assistant in New York before marriage. In the months before she vanished, her library card showed a run of books about murders and missing people. Sightings were reported along Route 2A and Route 128. None were confirmed. Middlesex case 61-2623 has never been closed.
