The Disappearance of Judge Crater | True Crime Sleep Stories

Welcome to 31 Nights of Frights on True Crime Sleep Stories...
On August 6, 1930, New York Supreme Court Justice Joseph Force Crater disappeared after dinner at a West 45th Street chophouse in Manhattan. He had returned from Maine earlier that week, spent the morning with files in his chambers, cashed checks for more than $5,000, and arranged a theater ticket before meeting two companions. No confirmed sighting exists after he left the restaurant.
A later grand jury found the evidence insufficient to determine whether he had left of his own accord, suffered amnesia, or been the victim of a crime. His wife Stella later discovered a will, cash, and a short note in their apartment; the police closed the missing-person file in 1979 with no remains identified. This episode recounts the known sequence of events and leaves the rest open.
