The Secrets of Madeleine Smith | True Crime Sleep Stories

Welcome to another night of 31 Nights of Frights on True Crime Sleep Stories.
Tonight we travel to Glasgow in the late 1850s, to Blythswood Square and the stone townhouses above the busy streets. An architect’s daughter writes secret letters to a packing clerk from Jersey. Three purchases of arsenic appear in the chemists’ registers on Sauchiehall Street, in her name. On the March 23, 1857, Pierre Emile L’Angelier dies of arsenic poisoning at home. A jury in Edinburgh returns a mixture of "not guilty" and "not proven". This episode walks through what the record actually shows... the letters, the poisons, the trial, the later years under other names... and where the disputed stories begin.
